Agenda 2-1-12

Assigned Case #1 (20 points) Due 2/29/12

2/8

Ch 7 & 8, Standard Costing and variance Analysis. Problems 7-19, 24, 26, 31, and 34; 8-31, 35, 38, and 40. (The problems are on MyAccountingLab.)

Also, QUIZ #1 will be given at the beginning of class, lasting one hour. It will cover Ch. 1-6. All general-knowledge questions, of the kind asked on the preliminary exam, are appropriate, plus problems of the kind that were assigned (excluding complicated budgets from Ch. 6). I will post a practice quiz by Monday on MyAccountingLab and alert you when it is ready.Practice Quiz over Ch 2-6  Solutions. The graded quizzes and solutions were returned in pdf files e-mailed to you on 2/10. Solutions Quiz 1 2-8-2012.pdf (also e-mailed 2/10).

Rules for the quiz: Bring a #2 pencil. You may use only the basic calculator that I provide (the ones we used on the pre-test exam, day 1).

Continue Ch. 7 & 8; Here are the solutions: CH 7 CH 8. I will count on you to ask questions after having worked on these and checked your work against the solutions. Problem 31 is a challenging puzzle, but I am not sure I agree with the solution. Are these really "efficiency variances"? Why or why not?

Agenda 2-15

2/22

Ch. 10, Determining How Costs Behave. Emphasis on proper use  of regression analysis and on use of learning-curves to forecast costs. (See agenda of 2/15 for lecture materials on Ch. 10.)

Problems: 10-18, 20*, 25, 27*, 29 (also answer using regression instead of hi/lo), 30, 32* (compute the regression yourself), 36, 40, and 41. Regression is easy to do in Excel. See, for example, http://www.wikihow.com/Run-Regression-Analysis-in-Microsoft-Excel . You will be responsible for interpreting the output from Excel regressions. (*Indicates problem not on MyAccountingLab.)

Discuss Problems from Ch. 20; 16, 18, 20, 22, 27, 28, 32, 36 Problems Ch 20.xlsx       Ch 20 solution notes Scanned.pdf

4/25

Review: Prepare Problems 3-38 & 39, 4-30, 5-35, 6-32, 7-32, 14- 32 & 33, 8-32, 10-38 & 39, 11-39, 12-27, 13-34, 15-35, 19-28, 20-29.

Review Problem Solutions.pdf. The purpose of these review problems is to stimulate thought and discussion about some of the key topics. As explained, the cumulative final exam will consist of modified or closely related questions similar to those questions on the three quizzes. For example, a CVP question that previously asked for a breakeven point might ask for the units needed to earn a certain income amount. Or, a regression problem that asked you for the equation might instead ask you for a forecast or an interpretation of the R2, etc. Thus, be sure you understand the related concepts in each problem. Similarly, for multiple-choice items, understand why the wrong items are wrong as well as why the right answer is right. Also, look at the review problem solutions (posted immediately above) for at least one comment where I said questions on "new" content (particularly the discussion of regression analysis) would be appropriate.
